"The Bodhnath stupa in Kathmandu was an important destination for Tibetan and Mongol pilgrims but it was not necessary to travel to Nepal to worship this stupa as the Bodhnath stupa was also used as an architectural model for similar structures built in Mongolia. Moreover, small size models of Bodhnath stupa were kept in some monasteries in Eastern Tibet and Mongolia. This cult associated this stupa with the eleven-faced Avalokiteshvara that was thought to reside inside the spherical dome. Several prints and also paintings depicting this stupa are still extant and document the popularity of the Bodhnath stupa in Mongolian regions. Various mantra are written on tiers of the stupa and a brief history of the original Bodhnath stupa is given in the lower part of this print.
